Homes Elevated to Avoid More Flooding

ATLANTA -- All of the homes on Hanover West Drive in Buckhead are on their way up to escape future flooding.

"I'm pretty confident this is going to work," said Anouk Gary, whose home is under renovation by the MOSAIC Group. "I'm most definitely ready to come back."

The Garys were forced to elevate their home by eight feet after the epic flood of 2009.

"I've never seen anything like that before in my life," she said.

Last September, Peachtree Creek across the street rose to new heights, pushing six feet of water inside the Gary's home. Anouk and her husband and their three children had to evacuate.

"When we came back once it receded, the house looked like a snow globe had been shaken up," Gary said. "Everything was shaken up with mud."

Peachtree Creek is well within its banks now, but it remains a real threat to the Garys and their neighbors. It came up to the houses again during heavy rains on May 3.

The Garys' home was elevated using steel beams and support pallets.

"They pretty much lifted the house like you're cranking up a car, jacking up a car," Anouk Gary said.

She admitted that she was ready to move after the flood, but her husband and their neighbors convinced her to stay.

"We love the school. We love the community support we get," she said. "It's a very tight neighborhood."

The entire renovation should be finished in time for the one-year anniversary of the September flood.
